CommentsHave just returned from a visit to the New Jersey on May 19th. I could not believe what a great job all the volunteers have done in making the ship look so good. Shipmates, if you ever have the opportunity to visit this Great Lady, do it. Never realized the ship had undergone such massive changes since I was aboard her in 1951-52. My wife & I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and wish we could attend the re-union in September.
CommentsHM1 Pete Jensen USN(Ret) I served aboard the New Jersey from 67 to 69. I was stationed in 'H' division and was at Pre-Com-School in San Diego. During the time I was running medical supply. I was transferred to FMF in 1969. I retired from the Navy in 1984 and feel honored to be a plank owner of such a great ship and crew. I hope to see you all in September 2002.
CommentsJust wondering if anyone remembers my Grandfather. His name was Everett Perrin. He was from Minnesota and he worked in the ship's print shop during WWII. Would love to hear from you.
CommentsI would like to know if anyone knew my father-in-law, Arthur W. Gott. He served on the USS NJ BB-62 around 1950-1952 (I think). His station was S2 Division (the store). He just came back from visiting his ship (6/1/02). I would love to hear from his fellow shipmates or if anyone has any pictures, etc. from that time. It would make a wonderful gift to him. Please email at trgott@hotmail.com . Thank you.
CommentsLooking for George (Sunny) Watson. He was a Master Chief Fire control Tech on NJ some where close to the last years of the NJ. Please contact me.

CommentsAlong with my wife, my daughter and two grandchildren we finally got to Camden to tour the New Jersey. I had not seen her since Nov 1956,and the closer we got the more you could see some things had changed. The radio antenna on the bow of the ship, the stacks w/ all the new superstructure and of course the new fire power the missiles and the gattling gun caught my eye. I had to chuckle at the new arrangement of the mess decks and the racks. Pretty neat I thought. Not all the decks are open, they told me that in July they should have them open for visitors , I couldn't see my work station so I'll make one more trip. IT WAS WELL WORTH THE EFFORT TO SEE HER AGAIN , SHE LOOKED SHARP AND READY FOR SEA. The docsents were really doing a great job they made the tour a lot more interesting. My camera messed up the first day so I had to go aboard again ,they let me have the run of the ship and I got some great shots. I had my yellow card from the Veterans Inc and got the tour and then some. We stayed in Philly and drove over to Camden, as you cross the bridge keep in the right lane ,it will take you right around to the ship. One more thing, when you leave the ship if you want a good dinner, get on 95 SOUTH it will get you to the Charter House Restaurant, right across the river you can have a good meal and look out the windows and see the BIG J. A neat site , at least we all got a kick out of that. We all waited a long time to make this trip I can honestly say it was a good time for my family. I will go again the LORD WILLING , so good luck to all especially all you former crew members ,and go if you get the chance......... TOMMY J
CommentsHello, my name is John S. Keller, and I served aboard the USS New Jersey BB-62, from re-commissioning in 1968 through to de-commissioning in 1969. I am currently a first class pilot of ships of any gross tonnage on the Great Lakes, and also a published author as well under the pen name of Dunkin at the online publishing concern known simply as Booksurge. Thought I'd add my name here to this wonderful sight, and thank you for keeping the flame burning. I find it rather strange, and wonderful both that I should find this site just before Memorial Day as my own father died on Memorial Day, and so I leave this poem of mine for all fathers. Father’s Memorial by Dunkin ~ My father and I never talked much about war he his, nor me mine. ~ Death stared out his eyes and he saw it in mine when I returned home but now I, at long last recognized it in his. ~ War hadn’t made us men it had killed us to humanity all those Santa Clause hopes and tooth fairy tale illusions a trade for ugly never afters petty indifference a diet now vindictive remorse our pillows. ~ He showed me his drawer where the medals were kept his, and his fathers both, and I placed mine next to theirs before we locked them away. ~ I saw my dad’s first tear then forming a glaze over blue irises it was his prayer for lost friends comrades, or so he told me that day and I prayed right along with him even though, in truth, I knew that those tears were for my son suckling at his mother’s breast.
CommentsI served on the New Jersey from 1981 to 83. I was a sergeant for the MARDET. I'm always looking for old friends. I also run gunmount 55 .5 inch never forget it had a bunch of old timers teach us how to use gunmount from RCA .up in Port Hueneme.
Comments"""""""""""""""""""""HELP""""""""""""""""""""""""" The USS LONG BEACH CGN-9 Association is developing a history of the ship. CommentsAs being a former crew member(1981-1984), I really like having this website. But I do have a complaint I was trying to order the Ship's ring and an error occurred after I submitted the order & I lost the link to the site.

CommentsWow it has been a long time since I sailed with the "Jersey ". I was aboard late 88 til early 91. I am looking for the following people ( Or anyone else who remembers our time in the Philippines) 1. Any of the " Regulators " ( you know who u r ) 2. Lance Schoenbaum the rest of these are their ranks at the time 3. SM1 Gallahan 4. SM3 Casey 5. SM3 Cohn 6. SM3 Pritchett 7. LTJG Gravatt I thought until I hit this site that she was still in WA. I am so glad that she is finally getting the respect she so deserves ( since we all know why she didn't get the surrender pact, Thank you very much Truman) I tell my wife about the greatest sleep I ever got and it was aboard the New Jersey. It was on the signal bridge in the Aleutian islands and I just got off a mid watch. The sky was as clear as you can get. I leaned up against the grate that came up from the boiler while watching the stars bob back and forth and passed out. I am glad to see reading this site that I am not the only one who didn't get to say a proper good bye to her. I guess we all thought she would be immortal and we would see her on the news in the future defending freedom somewhere, again. Well I guess I need to figure out a way to get to the state of New Jersey so I can see her. In the words of our Captain at that time W.E.T.S.U ( We eat this s*%t up ) Thanks, Black Angel ( SMSN Baumgartle )

CommentsMy dad (Larry Collins) was a crew member of the USS New Jersey during the Korea War. He tells us the story of the crew member who died, he was standing next to him when it happened. Anyway, my dad past away a few months ago. In going through his stuff we found a lot of information on the New Jersey and the USS Newton (his training ship). News papers photographs, logs, Ship newsletters, etc. I hate to throw this stuff away. Is there any place to donate, it might be worth something to them. Any suggestions would be appreciated. - Name: Sandra Heckel, granddaughter of Salvatore J Scarpace
CommentsMy grandfather stepped aboard the USS New Jersey in August, 1944... Salvatore James Scarpace (Radio Tech 3rd Class (T)). As far as I know he only served approximately a year, but he had many good times and memories. Unfortunately my grandfather died over 5 years ago, due to complications from crippling arthritis and never saw the USS New Jersey come out of mothballs and be turned into an American Museum. I would love to hear from anyone that knew him or served closely with him. His wife and children are all healthy and thriving, which Sharon is my mother. Agnes, his wife, is well and still living in Missouri. My husband, CTA2 Brian Heckel, is active duty Navy and we are presently stationed in Hawaii, living in all of the natural beauty it has to offer and taking in all the WWII memories. Please respond to heckelfamily@webtv.net

CommentsJust wanted to update my new e-mail address. Also I received my Jersey Bounce today and boy, what a nice bumper sticker. Will proudly display it above my Louisiana Navy Veterans plate. Thanks, Chuck Lyons
CommentsI just finished reading the Jersey Bounce and I really got a kick out of the articles . The info on the upcoming reunion I thought to be very informative and should help put the pieces to the September reunion together very nicely. My family has a trip planned this coming May and I'm not sure I can make it in Sept but I'd like to . I haven't seen this old gal we all hold so dear to our hearts since Nov of 1956 so I am looking forward to seeing her one more time, and maybe get lucky enough to see some of the old gang...
CommentsTo all other era shipmates please keep me informed of who's and how many are going. So far the those that have let me (by computer) know, are as follows; LEBANON CRISIS /PERSIAN GULF = 8 + 8 Guest = 16 VIETNAM ERA - 1969 = 41 + 211 Guest = 252 KOREA CONFLICT - 1957 = 36 + 44 Guest = 80 WORLD WAR II - 1948 = 25 + 55 Guest = 80 Now this does not mean that's all that's coming. I know there are those not owning a computer so these are just ballpark figures. Resp. Larry Kalakauskis, Liaison Officer
CommentsTo my Vietnam Era Shipmates. Hey Guys, except for the 40 of you that I have already tabulated. If you are contemplating on going to the reunion at Cherry Hill Sept. 12 - 15, 2002 will you please let me know how many of you are coming and how many are coming as your guest so I can have a listing of who's who for us. So far including your family and guests there are about 250 attending for a ball park figure. Thank You Larry K.
CommentsReported aboard 33 years from the last time I her. Wow what a thrill. My wife and eldest daughter were both with me. I had a VIP tour above and below decks. I was the ship's artist under Captain J. Edward Snyder in 68-69. I went in search of my art work, to my dismay most had been removed or resurfaced. However I was asked to come back and redo the original work (I will be back to do just that.) I went from the XO's quarters down one deck and forward all the way to the chain lockers in the bullnose. We toured turret one, fond memories, my daughter was taken into the gun rooms to get that up close look. Meanwhile my wife and I were introduced to the Admiral of the site. All in all one great day. Weather was cold 32 degrees, wind was 18-22 knots, water was white caps with swells of 2 1/2 feet. Looking forward to a warm day to return and kiss the decks again. "Spearhead" Loomis
CommentsON 19 MARCH 2002, I FINALLY GOT TO TOUR THE BIG J. I HAVEN'T BEEN ABOARD SINCE FED 1954. THE SHIP LOOKED GREAT, ESPECIALLY FOR BEING 59 YEARS OLD. IT BROUGHT BACK MANY MEMORIES. MY WIFE JOAN AND I, HAD THE GREAT LUCK OF HAVING JOHN MILLER AS OUR TOUR GUIDE. HE POINTED OUT THE MANY CHANGES TO THE SHIP SINCE THE SECOND KOREAN CRUISE. WE REMINISCED A LOT, SINCE HE WAS SERVING ON A DESTROYER IN 1953 IN THE SAME AREA. WHEN YOU GET TO TOUR THE SHIP, I HOPE YOU HAVE THE GOOD FORTUNE TO HAVE JOHN MILLER AS YOUR GUIDE. HOPE TO SEE MANY OF YOU AT THE 15TH REUNION(MY 1ST) AT CHERRY HILL AND ON BOARD THE J. JOE SILVI0 6TH DIV 1953-54 JOESILV NJ@aol.com
CommentsMy Grandfather, James Murray Rummel served on the New Jersey in 43-44. He worked in the Radio Room. If anyone remembers him, please email me.
CommentsI viewed the opening bow shot on the home page and I believe that was taken May 1968 just before we entered the Panama Canal. I was BM3 then, and was coxswain on our 30' whale boat and was ordered to take Neil Leifer on board while we were underway and approaching Panama Canal so he could get some interesting bow shots on film. He was sure nice to work with for a civilian. Mark Searle BM2
CommentsWhat's up, shipmates!! Haze grey and underway!! A day without water is like a day without sunshine, and a day in port is a day wasted!! I served Nov 1984 to Feb 1987 in E Division. The sound Powered Phone Sop and Forward IC were my home, although I did three tours mess cooking. Lt. Izimoto and ICC Mota were the bosses... Looking for all IC personnel who served during that time. Shoot me a e-mail and lets have some laughs!! Regards from a former Battleship sailor, Keith A. Ward (IC3 Ward)
CommentsLOOKING FOR ANYONE WHO KNEW MY BROTHER RICK GRAY. HE SERVED ON THE SHIP FROM 88-91 IN THE E DIVISION HE DID THE RECOMM. AND THE DECOMM. THE NAVY WAS HIS LIFE FOR 22 YEARS. HE JUST PASSED AWAY IN NOV. 2001. I JUST WOULD LOVE TO KNOW THE THOUGHTS OF ANYONE WHO KNEW HIM. PLEASE E-MAIL IF YOU CAN HELP.
CommentsGreetings to all my former shipmates(81-84)and all former "JerseyMen". Retired in '87 after 27 years at San Diego and am now living in central Mass. FYI there is a memorial dedicated to the Mass. veterans killed in Lebanon. It's right on the waterfront, and really well done. I still keep in touch with Judy Gorchinski (on the left coast), especially every October 23. Does anybody know the whereabouts of GMC Smith(Smitty), our first mess caterer who helped me and my crew build and decorate the CPO Mess? I know he left before the "Shakedown Cruise" due to heart trouble. Last I heard of MMCM Benton he was on the security force at the Marine Memorial Hotel in San Francisco. Remember its not how old you are, its how you are old. Take Care!
CommentsLike your site, I am a Tin Can Sailor USS Black DD-666 55-59 GMSN My big brother was on the New Jersey in the 50's I think about 52- 53 he was a FN. His name is Charles Huntington. Gr8 site Treeman
CommentsI would like to purchase a copy of the Dreadnought Returns and The Dreadnought Farewell.
CommentsI came aboard two weeks before the shakedown cruise. I left from Subic in 86 after sky 2 and the 5 inchers scored 11 ttb's out of 28 rounds and sky 3 hit the target. When at 2 am the night before their range unit was a 1,000 yards out of adjustment, I remember Master Chief Long down in forward plot milking the mark 1 able for everything it had. Now 11 ttb's out of 28 rounds is good if you remember that the mk25 radar had a 80 yard range notch and I think the round had to be within 20 or 30 yards of the target to go off. The only thing I missed beside the crew of the Jersey is the gunnery exercises. But like the rest of you I will never forget The morning on watch when the Marines were bombed. And how great the crew of the Jersey was. When I think about all the people I knew, I cannot help but hope that all of you have done well in life, some have moved from the U.S to places like Tasmania. Laduke. Others I talk to weekly or every few months. If anyone from FA division is out there drop me an email.
CommentsI served on board the New Jersey from Jan 1989 to decomm Feb 8 1991 and have the ring to prove it. Out of the 20 plus years in the navy being stationed on board a battle ship tops them all, and it being the USS New Jersey makes it even better. And to top that is to take the chiefs test and make it on a battle ship. MMC (SW). Last year was my first BB62 reunion which was held in Branson Mo. For those who serve on board her from her last recomm. to her last decomm. and did not no or could not make it you missed a good time. If you remember all the sea stories about the new jersey you heard I'm here to tell you I met the guys that started them. And they got some you have not heard before, I was proud to shake their hands and drink a beer with history. All I can say is if you can make it to Camden for the next reunion this is the one to be a part of because we take over the ship for a day. Hope to see some of the last decomm crew there. fair winds and following seas. John Hagen MMC(SW)RET 1991 DECOMM. CREW

CommentsGreetings fellow swabbies. I commissioned and decommissioned her during the Vietnam war in engine room number 4. although my mind has been ravaged by age and I don't recall too many names any more, I will never forget the great times I had with all my shipmates. The calls of port like Olongopo City with all the sounds, sites and very friendly women, the rooster tail from the fantail while doing 30 knots, the beautiful sunsets and sun rises, the Friday night smokers, which I still carry a reminder of with my broken nose, but most of the great bunch of guys in engine room 4. I never thought I would miss it as much as I do. Love to hear from anyone on board at the time.
CommentsI was sworn in to active duty service onboard the USS New Jersey (BB-62) on July 20, 1982 by my father CWO4 (Ret) Richard A. Thomas, a former member of the crew during the re-commissioning of the ship. I would like to end my career where it started, on turret #2, USS New Jersey (BB-62) on July 20, 2002 with my father.. I would also like to request the flag flown over the ship on that day to place in my shadow box. If this can be arranged, please let me know or let me know where I have to go or who to talk to about arranging this. Thank You, Michael W. Thomas IT1 USN

CommentsIt was 33 years ago today that I was injured in the shelldeck accident in Turret # 3. Just wanted to pass along my heartfelt thanks to those shipmates who were instrumental in saving my life; all my buddies in # 3 who came to my immediate aid to the ships doctor Dr. Denby and my crewmates who gave blood. Hope to see many of you this coming Sept. at the reunion at the ship so that I can thank each and every one of you in person.
CommentsJob well done
CommentsI love reading any information about my old ship. I put her in commission and left her in Tokyo. I was in the 5th and ss div. Anyone that remembers me please let me hear from you. I think the New Jersey deck log is a great way of keeping in contact with our old buddies and news about our ship.
CommentsOne more name of the guys I served with ,and would really like to get in touch with, Bob Smith he came from New Jersey . One regret I have is that when I left the ship I didn't get addresses of the guys I served with from 54/55/56/ S-3 DIV. Fifty years sure makes a difference how we look at this ole world.... 10 Hollow Tree Ct., Hamilton, Ohio 45013.

THE OOD GAVE ME PERMISSION TO BOARD AND PASSED THE WORD FOR MY BROTHER TO LAY UP TO THE QUARTER DECK. HE SHOWED ME THE GALLEY AND MESSING SPACES. I RETIRED FROM THE NAVY IN I966. I HAVE HIS PICTURE OF THE SHIP HANGING ALONG SIDE OF MINE.

CommentsServed on the Battleship from Dec '83 to Jan '86. Reported on board as a BM1 and started out in 1st Div. with BM1 Edwards and BM2 Jimmy Hann. We played guitars and songs like, "New Jersey lighters, tee shirts and caps." In '84 made BMC. BMC Anderson was my sponsor. :) Was moved to 4th div as LCPO. 4th Div was a good division. Good bunch. As was 1st Division. Will never forget my tour of duty on her. She was and still is a great ship. Hope to hear from former shipmates who may remember me.
CommentsServed aboard the Big "J" from May 83 to Nov 87. Best tour of duty I had. I would like to hear from anyone that served in Medical during this time. I would also like to find FC2 Bryce Peppard. If anyone knows his whereabouts, please contact me.
CommentsMy father, Glenn Thomas Estep, was a cook on the USS New Jersey during the 1960's. If there is someone that remembers him, and possibly have pictures from the Navy scrapbooks, please contact me at riroc2002@aol.com . Any pictures will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Sincerely, Randall E. Estep

CommentsIn my 30 year career I have served on many ships, I.e., DDE, DD, CVS, AO, AV, AFS, and BB-62. I served aboard the worlds most decorated, and only commissioned battle ship, from 1967-1969 through decommissioning. I was LPO, BT1 in number 4 fire room. The New Jersey was, is, and will always be what Firepower For Freedom stands for. I hope to see some of my shipmates at the 2002 reunion. God Bless and Merry Christmas
